After what feels like a century (okay, 20 years), the new version of GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is about to land. For those who haven’t been living under a rock, GIMP has been the go-to free alternative to Photoshop since 1995. It’s had its ups and downs, but now, it’s ready to show us what it’s got in the shiny new GIMP 3.0.

What’s New?

Let’s be honest, the leap from GIMP 2.x to 3.0 took way longer than anyone thought it would. But that’s what happens when a massive global community of developers is trying to pull off major updates for a free program. From GIMP 2.0 in 2004 to 2.10 in 2018, we’ve had plenty of small updates, but GIMP 3.0 promises to shake things up.

New Look, Same GIMP
The most obvious change is the new user interface. It’s the same ol’ GIMP, but it’s smoother and better suited for high-resolution screens. Goodbye blurry icons on your fancy 4K display! They’ve also switched to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) for icons, meaning they’ll look crisp no matter what your screen’s resolution is.

More Compatible, Less Headaches
Another big win for GIMP 3.0 is compatibility. They’ve worked hard to ensure that any projects made in GIMP 2.10 will still work in 3.0. So, no more “oops, lost that file” moments. Plus, it’s making it easier to carry over all your beloved third-party plugins.

Speed and Testing
As with any major update, there are bound to be some bugs. The community is already testing out the release candidate, and depending on how the bugs behave, the final release could happen anytime from now until, well, maybe next week.

GIMP 3.0 is expected to land in late 2024 or early 2025, and it’s shaping up to be a game-changer. The question is: Will you be ready to jump in, or will you still be clinging to your 2.10 like it’s a lifeline?

Stay tuned for more updates, and don’t forget to share this with your mates who are still stuck in the GIMP Stone Age!
