Here’s a bit of bad news – South Africa’s become the favourite playground for cybercriminals, who test their attacks here before unleashing them on the rest of the world. Thanks to a recent event by Orange Cyberdefense, law enforcement officials have confirmed that cybercrime syndicates are using SA as a ‘proving ground’ for their attacks.

It turns out that many of the cybercrimes we’ve seen locally – from SIM swap scams to phishing and malware attacks – are now being exported worldwide. Remember the SIM swap attack that targeted bank accounts? Well, it was first tested here, and now it’s wreaking havoc in countries like Brazil, Russia, and even Canada.

South Africa’s not just a playground for hackers because it’s a great place for a holiday – no, it’s because local syndicates like the infamous Black Axe gang have set up shop here. Originally from Nigeria, this cult-like group has spread its wings beyond cyber fraud into drugs and human trafficking. Interpol’s even called them a global security threat, and for good reason. Their reach and influence are massive.

The good news? Law enforcement is onto them. A global crackdown in 2022, called Operation Jackal, resulted in 75 arrests and millions of rands intercepted in bank accounts. Two major players were caught in South Africa, thanks to international cooperation.

While we’re not the Wild West when it comes to cybercrime, South Africa’s role as a hub for criminal syndicates has certainly put us on the map for global cyber threats. So, what can we do? Keep your bank accounts secure, stay sharp online, and keep an eye on your devices – we’re all part of the front line in the global fight against cybercrime.
